Omega 3 Fatty Acids and Cholesterol

A Japanese clinical study was conducted recently on the effects of the essential omega 3 fatty acids on the health status of people with a high cholesterol level. The test concluded that one of the omega 3 fatty acids, the EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid), plays an important role in lowering the risk of non-fatal coronary events. After consuming on a daily basis omega 3 supplements, the risk for such medical conditions has been reduced by more than 20%.

For four and a half years more than 18,000 Japanese people, all having a high level of cholesterol in their blood, were monitored. Before they entered the research, all of them have already been prescribed statins, or cholesterol regulating medication. Half of the test subjects were given EPE supplements beside their usual medication, while the other half remained only with their prescribed cholesterol drugs.

When the test was ended, the specialists found out that those who had received EPA supplements witnessed a 24% lower risk of suffering from angina pectoris (a type of chest pain) and a 19% lower risk if suffering from non-fatal coronary events. The omega 3 fatty acids help the body protect itself better from cholesterol and they also play an important role in the prevention of other medical conditions, such as some types of cancer.

People who take regularly omega 3 supplements also have a lower risk of developing heart related conditions, such as heart attacks or blood vessel clogging. This risk is especially higher in persons having a higher level of cholesterol in their blood.

The study's recommendation was that taking 1,8g of EPA daily has a significant role in preventing major coronary events.

Fish oil, spirulina and microalgae are all very rich in EPA fatty acids. Adding these foods in your diet can be as useful as taking omega 3 supplements.

A big advantage of taking omega 3 supplements and adding minor changes to your diet is that they are preventive measures. By preventing these medical situations from developing, you save a lot of time and money afterwards spent on medication and/or surgery. Also, these dietary changes present a low risk to the person's health, as taking omega 3 supplements shows no side effects.

The results will be even more significant if you combine these preventive measures with other recommendations made by doctors: a balanced diet, giving up smoking and regularly physical exercise.
