So what is proper dieting? Let's start by taking a quick look at what it isn't. It isn't taking a pill and continuing to eat whatever you like. It isn't starving yourself and eating next to nothing. It also isn't eating nothing but grapefruit or soup or any other one or two items diets. Instead, proper dieting is eating a balanced diet, drinking plenty of water and getting enough exercise so you are burning more calories than you take in on a daily basis.
You need to eat food from each of the five food groups on a regular basis. The key is to closely watch how much you eat from each group - and what choices you make within the food group. Each food group has choices and some are better than others to help you lose weight. Within the protein group, for example, fish and white meat chicken are your healthiest choices.
If you eat red meat, choose lean cuts and try to avoid protein choices that are high in fat. When it comes to dairy, choose low-fat or no- fat options. Fruits are good for you, but they are high in fructose, which is sugar, so vegetables are a healthier choice.
Whole grains are good for your digestive system - and they will help you feel full longer than many other foods will. You do need some fat in your diet, but use low cholesterol fats rather than animal fats or other high cholesterol fats.
For steady weight loss, it works best to eat more often, with smaller portions at each sitting. Three small meals, with two snacks, spread throughout the day provides your body with energy and keeps your metabolism revved up so it can burn calories throughout the day.
Exercise will also pump up your metabolism so you can burn more calories for a longer period of time than if you don't exercise. Vary your workout routines and alternate aerobic workouts and strength training for steady consistent results.
Give up on the idea of magic pills that will shed pounds with no effort on your part. Don't wast your money on gimmicks and tricks that don't make common sense. Face it, eating less and moving your body more is the only way to healthy, permanent weight loss.
If there was an easy way to lose weight that really worked, obesity wouldn't be an epidemic in America, would it?
