Fertility Diet - Do's and Don'Ts

Fertility diet is a diet that helps males and females to increase their level of productiveness. To be able to reproduce is not as easy as one may think it is. Intake of right amount of nutrients can help to balance the reproductive hormone in one's body. It has been proved that some foods helps to increase fertility, while others may reduce it. For women, ovulation can be improved by hormones such as progesterone, testosterone, and estrogens. These hormones can be better produced with the help of fatty acids that come from foods rich in good fats and low cholesterol. These good fats include olive oil, walnut oil, yogurt, low- fat dairy foods etc.

For couples trying to conceive, a diet high in antioxidants is essential. It helps to clean the body and improve immunity. Fruits, herbs, spices, and brightly coloured vegetables are rich in antioxidants. Selenium is an antioxidant that protects the genetic material and also increases the sperm count in men. This can be found in foods such a fish, cashew, sunflower seeds etc. A lot of wheat should be consumed, as it is rich in zinc. Zinc improves the sperm count in males. protects the DNA and is also good for estrogens and progesterone hormones. Iron is beneficial as it improves the red blood cell production that helps to deliver oxygen throughout the body. Iron rich foods are animal meat, beans potatoes, etc.

Foods to avoid
To increase the level of fertility certain foods should be avoided. Foods that increase the level of insulin such as sugary foods, carbohydrates etc. This is very necessary for those women with polycystic ovary syndrome. Some foods also disturbs the hormone levels in the body. These include pumpkin, soya milk, rice, processed meats, yams, and all those fruits and vegetables that are grown with the help of artificial fertilizers and pesticides.

Dairy products that contains lactose, which is not good for the ovaries. It can also cause ovarian cancer- as said by some of the experts. Therefore consumption of milk, ice- creams and cottage cheese should be avoided. Calcium present in these dairy products can be obtained from green leafy vegetables that are rich in calcium.
