Eating Lower Cholesterol Foods Can Prevent Serious Diseases

Cholesterol is mainly found in your bloodstream. It is oftentimes used by the human body in the production of cell membranes and a number of vital hormones. However, excessive amounts of cholesterol is harmful. When cholesterol level is excessive, one needs to lower cholesterol by eating right foods otherwise fatty deposits will form in the blood vessels. These fatty deposits decrease the amount of blood flowing to the heart and brain thus creating serious problems.

Two types of cholesterol can be found in the human body - low density lipoprotein and high density lipoprotein. The first is low density lipoprotein, also known as bad cholesterol, which can combine with other materials to trigger formation of plaque that narrows the arterial opening. Clots can develop and block the narrowed arterial opening, which in turn causes a heart attack or stroke.

High density lipoproteins, on the other hand, are the good kind of cholesterol. High levels of high density lipoproteins decrease the risk of a heart attack, while low levels of good cholesterol reverses it. High density lipoproteins carry cholesterol to the liver where it is disposed, removing it from arterial plaque.

Fortunately, low density lipoproteins are preventable and treatable. Proper diet, exercise, and positive outlook in life can lower bad cholesterol. If you are planning to go for lower cholesterol foods, you have to change your diet and lifestyle. Discuss your plans with your physician or dietitian. Consider adding nuts to your everyday meals. Raw walnuts and almonds can be easily added to any menu and can also be eaten as snacks.

You should also consider making oatmeal or oat bran cereal as part of your breakfast or dinner. These cereals have soluble fibers that reduce bad cholesterol. Adding fruits to your cereal meal can provide you with plant phenols and sterols, which are good in cutting down levels of bad cholesterol in blood. Many cereal products can be added to cookies and pastries, giving you an easy way to still enjoy eating while going for lower cholesterol foods.

Choose to have lower cholesterol foods like salads with extra virgin olive oil. Keep in mind, though, that there are oils that increase bad cholesterol levels, while there are some, like virgin olive oil that actually decreases its levels into tolerable amounts. All vegetables and fruits are good for you, but avocados can really get you some of those healthy fats that you need. Try to add some slices of avocado to a salad, or you can eat them plain.

Foods with fish can also lower bad cholesterol levels, as they have omega-3 fatty acids that can help keep your heart healthy and function properly. You can also consult your physician if you can add supplements on your diet to lower your cholesterol level even more.

The above-mentioned foods are perfect in lowering cholesterol, especially for people aged 60 and above, since cholesterol levels drastically rise when people get older. See? Through just adjusting your diet and sticking to a healthy lifestyle, you can make yourself a healthier person. Just remember that if these foods do not work, ask your doctor and consider taking prescription drugs.
