Beware of Fad Diets

Fad diets, such as low carbohydrate diets, have recently exploded onto the market and millions of people are using fad diets because of claims like "lose 25 pounds in 4-5 weeks! An example of a fad diet is the Atkins diet, a fad diet which has become increasingly popular. Many want to try fad diets without doing research on fad diets and examining the potential dangers. There are 4 phases during the Atkins diet, and carbohydrates intake ranges from 5-20% during these phases. The following is a list of dangerous consequences associated with the Atkins diet:

* Dramatically reducing your carbohydrate intake brings the body into ketosis. Ketosis produces excessive nitrogen that has to be excreted, damaging the kidneys.

* Eating little or no fruits and vegetables dramatically limits essential phyto chemicals, vitamins, and minerals that your body needs to function properly.

* Eating more proteins, fats, and cholesterol increases the plaque build up in blood vessels. American diets are already high in protein and fat, so eating more only increases the risk of heart disease, stroke, and diabetes.

* Finally the most significant consequence of them all is the brain and central nervous system needs 120-150 grams of glucose from carbohydrates each day to function correctly. The maximum intake of carbohydrates during the Atkins diet is only 60 grams. This forces the body to compensate and use other sources to run the brain and central nervous system. The body absolutely can not function without the brain and central nervous system, so why deprive it of what it needs?

The Atkins diet has shown quick weight loss results. As for long term success without exercise, the success rate is very low. There are no short cuts such as fad diets to living a healthy lifestyle. Any fad diets that claim large weight loss without exercise are unhealthy and should be avoided. It turns out that it might be as easy as mom always said, eat your fruits and vegetables and get out and exercise. Fad diets are the not the answer.
