Diet And Heart Disease - Are They Related?

Though there is no solid proof of the relation between heart disease and a diet that is high in saturated fats, but there is definitely strong evidence supporting this theory. But in order to stay healthy and prevent having a heart attack, we need to make a decision on the basis of the knowledge available.

Many researches indicate that we should cut our intake of fats, especially saturated fats. Some doctors may argue on this, but almost none would say taking such step is harmful. Therefore there is really nothing to lose in making such dietary changes, and very possible gaining a longer life.

There are many ways in limiting our consumption of fats and cholesterol. We can cut down on eggs intake to three or less a week. Use low-fat or skim milk instead. Avoid whipped toppings and cream substitutes as they may contain coconut oil which is more saturated than butter. Also avoid frying and stewing meat as these cooking methods increase fat content. Eat more cottage cheese, farmer cheese, pot cheese, ricotta or yogurt instead of hard processed cheese. Do remember when choosing poultry, select smaller and younger birds which have less fat. Alternatively you may want to choose fish instead.

Do remember to look at the label on the food can for the value of fat. In the U.S. if the label on the food can says "fat free", the actual fat content can be between 0 and 0.5 grams. Thus it may not be absolutely zero fat.

There is also non-labeled food which you have no idea what the fat content is. One way of finding out is by reading some of the "fat count" books which are readily available in leading book stores. They give you nutritional information for a great variety of fresh food and packaged food.

But for a healthy body, we will need a little fat in our diet. The purpose of this fat is to help the body to absorb fat soluble vitamins and also to produce essential fatty acid that the body needs.

Thus by following some simple steps and making minor dietary changes will definitely let you live a longer and healthier life.
