How to Make a Low Carb Diet Healthy

Eating a low carb diet still is widely used by many people trying to lose weight, but is it still a viable solution to help you shed pounds and keep you healthy at the same time? Well, one thing is for sure is that those caught up in this low carb diet frenzy are definitely a little lighter in the bank account while advertisers and food manufacturers keep getting richer. Is there any truth to the low carb diet still being a long term weight management solution?

It's obvious that there is still a very large market for low carbohydrate products as companies and supermarkets are scrambling to stock there shelves with the latest and greatest items. Whether it's low carb breads and cereals or carb free frozen meals, you cannot get through a single aisle at your local supermarket without seeing something new on the shelf. What cannot be determined is how long this diet fad will last and when the next latest and greatest weight loss solution will hit the markets. But the question remains: Is the low carb diet a reasonable and healthy way to lose weight and keep it off? The answer is yes and no.

Eating a lower amount of carbs per day can be very beneficial to your overall health as long as you're reducing the right types of carbohydrates. Even a slight reduction in the amount of bad carbs (like white breads and rice, sugary snacks and beverages, etc) can do wonders for helping you to lose weight, controlling your cholesterol levels, reducing the possibility of developing diabetes, decreasing your blood pressure levels and keeping insulin levels in check.

These health benefits, which are nothing to sneeze at, are enough of a reason to really start looking at your diet and making sure you're not over doing carbs on a daily basis. Again, just a slight reduction can help you tremendously so try to substitute water for sugary beverages and juices or low carb whole wheat bread for normal white bread. You'll see an amazing difference over time in how you feel and you'll become healthier in the process.

The flip side is not so much lowering the amount of carbs you eat on a daily basis but eating the right types of carbs. Fruits and vegetables are simply the greatest things on the planet for you to eat and by simply adding more into your diet and taking out unnecessary highly processed refined carbs (i.e. white breads, cookies, crackers, etc) you will put yourself on track for a long and healthy life.

I'm sure if you've read about going low carb you've seen people talk about how 'refined carbs' are the ones to avoid and I would say that is 100% true. Making it a habit to substitute more fruits and veggies into your life is a simple change that will absolutely make a difference in how you feel and will ultimately ward off a lot of diseases like cancer and heart disease. It's a must in any diet.

Bottom line is that carbohydrates are simply not bad for you. It is your choice of carbohydrates that determines the healthy value so try to keep two basic ideas in mind when deciding. First, choose healthy fruits and vegetables over processed snacks and you'll do just fine. Second, remember the old adage 'everything in moderation, nothing in excess.' It applies to many parts of your life but it is so important and should be practiced when it comes to carbs too. Here's to your health!
