Treat High Cholesterol

The cholesterol that your body absorbs can be reduced if you use Ezetimibe. Ask your doctor about this drug as well as the complete treatment program that includes diet, exercise and weight management.

Help your body reduce the cholesterol that it absorbs by asking your doctor about Ezetimibe. The drug is prescribed by many physicians to treat elevated blood cholesterol. Unlike other drugs that lower cholesterol levels by preventing the liver from producing cholesterol, Ezetimibe works by reducing the cholesterol absorption from the intestine. The drug does not affect absorption of fat-soluble vitamins or triglycerides.

Indications:

Ezetimibeis available in a 10-mlligram tablet. The drug can be used in combination with statins to improve your body's total cholesterol level, triglycerides, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, apolipoprotein B and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol. It has been proven that combining Eztimibe and statin is more effective in reducing cholesterol level. Furthermore, Ezetimibe may also be combined with fibrates to improve apolipoprotein B, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and cholesterol levels.

Contraindications:

Your doctor may adjust your dosage of Ezetimibe use if you have a kidney disease, thyroid disorder or using steroid hormones or medicine. Some drugs that your doctor should be aware of before he prescribed Ezetimibe to lower your cholesterol include cholestryramine, colesevelam, colestipol, gemfibrozil, cyclosporine and blood thinners.

It is also advisable to tell your doctor about other prescription or over-the-counter drugs that you are using such as vitamins, herbal products and minerals. During your use of Ezetimibe, try to avoid eating fatty-rich foods or those with high cholesterol. The drug will not be effective in reducing the cholesterol level in your body if you do not adhere strictly to a cholesterol-lowering diet plan.

Side Effects:

Allergic reactions may occur during your use of Ezetimibe. Some signs are hives, swelling of your lips, throat, face and tongue and difficulty in breathing. There are also possible serious side effects such as unusual muscle pain, tenderness and weakness, chest pain, pancreatitis and nausea.

Keep in mind that Ezetimibe is only effective if taken together with a complete treatment program that includes exercise, weight control and proper diet.
