Ever since the Atkins diet was published, low-carb diets started becoming fashionable. With so many people being overweight, a lot of people want to lose weight in a quick and easy manner. There are even a few people who don't need to lose weight but they obsess over a few pounds that they would like to lose. On the other hand, other people absolutely must lose weight for medical reasons and they may be dealing with over 100 pounds of extra weight that they want to lose.
Many different diets exist, including some low-carb diets. To be honest, most of these diets can result in weight loss if they are followed correctly, and by that I don't mean every second of every day. An important factor in determining if your diet will succeed or fail is how you deal with the unavoidable occasions where you indulge a little too much or eat something that you should be avoiding. Those who simply acknowledge their lapse in diet judgment, then resume their diet as if nothing happened will likely succeed. Everybody slips up every now and then, so just accept this fact. You're human after all...
You must use a diet that you can easily maintain. For some people, low-carb diets will be suitable as they are quite easy to understand and follow. You basically have to avoid or limit your intake of foods with high carbohydrate content, which are pasta, bread, potatoes, rice, sugar and other grains. Once you become familiar with what carbs consist of, you simply have to pick and choose the meals you can and can't have.
However, there is criticism associated with low-carb diets. This criticism is based on dieters getting most of their daily calorie intake from dairy, meat and other products that are high in fat. Such a diet would lead to high cholesterol levels and overall high saturated fat intake. This is why you should seek medical advice before starting this type of diet. Weight loss can be good in the early stages, but some people can't deal with the restrictions in the longer run, which leads to them not sticking to their diet.
Many people on low-carb diets have trouble eliminating bread and pasta from their diet. They have to stop eating toast, pizza, sandwiches and spaghetti! Most of our convenient, quick to prepare meals are based around carbs: fries, hamburgers, pasta with sauce, sandwiches, etc. Even alcoholic drinks such as beer are high in carbs! While alcohol is normally off limits on most diets simply because it is high in calories and has low nutritional value, low-carb diets make it even more off limits.
When all is said and done, there is still food that low-carb dieters can enjoy: vegetables, beef, chicken and other animal products. Based on how long the low-carb diet recipes have been on the best-sellers lists, low-carb diets are obviously popular. You simply have to see if this type of diet is appropriate for you!
