The Low carb diet is a diet where you primarily consume protein and little to no vegetables, fruit and grains. The first of these popular diets, Atkins gained popularity in the 1990s. The high level of protein puts a strain on you kidneys and liver. The lack of fiber could also lead to more serious health problems like colon cancer and dangerous cholesterol levels.

A study done recently by psychologist Holly A. Taylor, PhD seemed to prove the lack of carbohydrates could leave you fuzzy headed and forgetful. One week after starting a weight loss diet the constricted carbohydrates, participants in the Tuft University performed poorly on memory tests than participants who followed a low-calorie, high-carbohydrates. Weeks after the low-carb dieters' ended their diet, their performance on the memory tests improved.

With all the advertising they make you believe that the low carb diet is the weight loss miracle you are looking for. They sell special products in the grocery store. So not only is the diet hurting your health but also your pocket book. Steaks are $4.00 a pound, broccoli is $.49 a pound. The "special" protein bars are $1.00 +.

The key to losing weight is to consume less calories than you burn. The key to good health is to eat a good balance of protein, fruits, vegetables and whole grains. The key to great health is to exercise 3 hours every week. Add all this together and you have the miracle weight loss program you are looking for.

So where do you begin. First you have to decide that you are going to get rid of your fat and get healthy. Once you have decided, then the next step is to gain knowledge of what you currently eat. How many calories are you consuming in a day? For one day keep a journal of everything you eat, figure out the amount of calories and then from here on eat 500 calories less every day. Walk 1 hour around your neighborhood 3 times a week. A healthy weight loss is around 2 lbs a week.
