Low Carb Diet

Carbohydrates we eat are the main reason for the excess weight of the body. Everyone of us including the doctors and weight-loss experts say for sure that the excessively refined or processed items like potatoes, baked goods, bread, pasta and other convenient foods have large amounts of carbohydrates that increases the fat content.

The general principle of this low carb diet is, it limits the intake of the foods that contain carbohydrates. Few popular weight lose programs like the Atkins, South Beach, Zone and Carbohydrate Addict Diet constitute in developing the low carb diet.

Does It Really Work?

Carbohydrates are very much essential for the body. Carbohydrates are also referred as carbs. And thus this diet plan is called low carb diet. And as the name suggests, this is consuming food that has low carb content. Carbs are of two types. They are sugars and starches. Simple carbs like sweet tasting foods, cookies and sweets that can be easily digested fall under the category of Sugars. Complex carbs like bread, white rice fall in the category of Starches. Starches take longer time to digest.

The sugars are converted to glucose which is used by the body cells as energy for the body. Insulin is discharged by the pancreas when the molecules of glucose pass through the intestine. This insulin is a hormone that is absorbed by the cells. The extra glucose from the blood is then absorbed by the muscles, fat and other cells which in turn help in bringing down the insulin levels to normal.

Glycemic index is a chart that lists the ranking of foods depending on the rate at which the sugars are released into the blood. After having a meal that contains high Glycemic index elements, the levels of blood-sugar increase quick and high. Glucagon is a hormone that helps the body to burn the stored energy in the body when the levels of the blood-sugar index falls down. The insulin is required to block all that sugar into muscles. Fat cells also weaken the functioning of the Glucagon. Therefore, the glucose levels fall down leaving the body very much tired. At this moment, the hunger signals are generated in the body by the intestine and the brain. This leads to the over consumption of carbs ultimately leading to more fat, more insulin levels, more hunger and again more weight gain. This Is a cyclic process and can turn out to be dangerous when left unattended.

On the differing side of this, following a low carb diet can successfully end this cycle. Let us see how this cycle can be stopped. Low carbs intake, low insulin level, better glucagon functioning and higher weight loss. This also improves the triglycerides, decreases the level of LDL (bad cholesterol) and increases the level of HDL (good cholesterol). Excessive triglycerides can cause damage to the coronary but are essential.

Therefore, go get some cookbooks that are good with low carb food items. This can help you lose weight and yes! You can lose those extra pounds and live happily ever.
