About That Diet

The first diet plan I ever heard of was the grapefruit diet. I was a bit young to pay a lot of attention to it, but it was very popular...despite the fact that the fruit doesn't grow in West Virginia. In my observation of those who were on it, it didn't seem to be all that effective.

Other diet fads have come and gone, though a few have hung around for a long time. Low carb diets are tenacious, because they can actually cause weight loss. Unfortunately, the fat and cholesterol content climbs dramatically on these diets.

Weight loss surgery seems to be very popular. I'm not really referring to liposuction, but the lap band and gastric bypass surgeries. These, too, seem to work.

Jenny Craig and Weight Watchers are also very popular happinesslifetime.com diet programs, and these programs have the right idea. Weight loss and being a healthy weight are not about one time fixes. They are a lifetime commitment to proper nutrition and exercise.

I'm not writing this from the angle of someone unfamiliar with the process. I'm down in the trenches with you...weight loss is a constant struggle for me. Why is that?

We are constantly barraged with enticing commercials about food. Unfortunately, most of the food ads we see are not things we should eat. The sheer number of calories in a fast food combo meal is staggering. One burger, fries and soft drink can cost you all the calories for the day. The fat, cholesterol and sodium counts are so high, they can take up two or three days worth of what you are supposed to consume.

So, what are we supposed to do about it? I recommend you do what I did, educate yourself. There is a new ally in that regard which may surprise you. Many states have now passed laws that require restaurants to prominently display calorie counts. Most of them also post fat, cholesterol and sodium counts as well.

The reaction of the consumers has surprised both restaurants and law makers...but not me. I use this information to make better choices at restaurants, and apparently so do a lot of consumers. restaurants are finally getting the picture...we don't want a lot of fat, calories and sodium. We do want food that tastes good. They can go together.

Of course, diet doesn't work well without exercise. If you don't have time to do a complete workout, there are ways to sneak exercise in. Park further away from the store (or your work). Take the stairs instead of the elevator. You could even learn "chair-robics," and exercise at work or surfing the web.

There are sites that calculate your calories consumed and the calories burned. This is valuable information, in that you know how many calories you can have at dinner.
