Your Cholesterol And A Balanced Diet

Many people suffer from high cholesterol. This is due to the expanding fast food industry which deals mainly in fatty, fried foods. People turn to these fast food outlets as they are often too tired to cook a home meal after a long day at work. This habit will eventually be the death of them.

It is not impossible to correct a high cholesterol, but it does take dedication and a strong will. The first thing to do is get yourself onto a diet. Not ine of those calorie counting escapades, a proper balanced diet which allows you to eat enough to keep your body supplied with energy, but keeps the bad foods out.

Then you need to make sure your balanced diet is tailored to minimize the following:

? Saturated fats

? Partially hydrogenated vegetable oils

? Dairy fats

? Lard

? Fatty meats (lean is okay)

? Alcohol

? Refined sugar and flour

You do need to have some fats in your diet. The ones to avoid are the ones labelled trans or hydrogenated fats. They contain large quantities of cholesterol raising compounds.

You can replace all these "do nots" with:

? Fresh fruit and vegetables

? Whole grain breads

? Low fat (preferably skim) dairy

? Canola or virgin olive oil

? Chicken, turkey and fish

? Nuts and legumes

? Garlic

Foods high in fibre are good for regulating the digestive system and for absorbing cholesterol.

A balanced diet is a lifestyle. It does not help to just follow the diet until the problem is fixed, it will return as soon as you return to your old habits.
