Cholesterol is a major health problem that affects millions of people around the world. It is commonly dismissed as doesn't seemingly contribute directly to any major illness but many people overlook the fact that it is a major contributor to heart illness, disease and even heart attacks. Without wanting to bore you too much with the differences between the two, I'll impart the key message. LDL is bad cholesterol and you want to rid your body of this and HDL is the good form of cholesterol, you clearly want a little of this.
So, how can you reduce your cholesterol levels? Follow the next steps and you will be well on your way.
• Cut down on saturated fats. If you've read the previous paragraph then the benefits of this are fairly self explanatory.
• Eat oily fish regularly. Oily fish is an extremely rich source of omega-3, a type of polyunsaturated fat. Omega-3 can help to lower your blood triglyceride levels which, in turn will help to prevent your blood from clotting. It can also help to regulate your heart rhythm.
• Eat a diet rich in fibre. Any food that is high in soluble fibre such as oats, beans, pulses, lentils, nuts, fruits and vegetables, will help to reduce cholesterol.
• Exercise regularly. By this, I mean at least four or five times a week. Exercise will increase your levels of HDL cholesterol, which is the good type of cholesterol. As explained above, this is the type you want. Clearly you can see there is no black art to keeping your heart healthy. Follow the steps above and there's no need to visit your doctor and start on that medication. All you need is a little determination and courage.
