Reduce Cholesterol With These Top Tips

Cholesterol is a major health problem that affects millions of people around the world. It is commonly dismissed as doesn't seemingly contribute directly to any major illness but many people overlook the fact that it is a major contributor to heart illness, disease and even heart attacks. Fortunately, more and more people everyday are now asking themselves how to reduce cholesterol but if you don't know anything about it then it is pretty difficult to counter its dangerous side effects. If you don't know how it gets in your body in the first place then how can you stop it in the future?

Reducing your cholesterol levels is a simple, painless procedure. It can be done naturally, by changing your diet and the food you consume or it can be done medically, with drugs. If you are like me, then you will probably choose the first option. Then again, maybe you see prescription medication as the easier option and are willing to take the risk of any side effects. Either way, the important message is that high cholesterol can kill if it is not tackled and thankfully, by reading this you have taken the first step to beating it.

Nutrition is vitally important to your health and eating good food is my preferred method to prevent high cholesterol lining my arteries with plaque. Saturated and Trans fat and food high in cholesterol all contribute to cholesterol levels and if you eat a diet high in these ingredients then the chances are you're eating too much fatty food.

Before I give you a couple of top tips to reduce cholesterol, I must explain a couple of terms you have probably heard banded around when discussing cholesterol levels. There are two main types of cholesterol; LDL, Low-Density Lipoprotein and HDL, High-Density Lipoprotein. Without wanting to bore you too much with the differences between the two, I'll impart the key message. LDL is bad cholesterol and you want to rid your body of this and HDL is the good form of cholesterol, you clearly want a little of this.

So, how can you reduce your cholesterol levels? Follow the next steps and you will be well on your way.

Cut down on saturated fats. If you've read the previous paragraph then the benefits of this are fairly self explanatory.

Eat oily fish regularly. Oily fish is an extremely rich source of omega-3, a type of polyunsaturated fat. Omega-3 can help to lower your blood triglyceride levels which, in turn will help to prevent your blood from clotting. It can also help to regulate your heart rhythm.

Eat a diet rich in fibre. Any food that is high in soluble fibre such as oats, beans, pulses, lentils, nuts, fruits and vegetables, will help to reduce cholesterol.

Exercise regularly. By this, I mean at least four or five times a week. Exercise will increase your levels of HDL cholesterol, which is the good type of cholesterol. As explained above, this is the type you want. Clearly you can see there is no black art to keeping your heart healthy. Follow the steps above and there's no need to visit your doctor and start on that medication. All you need is a little determination and courage.
