The U.S. is becoming a nation with a "muffin top." There are a lot of cute names for this phenomenon, but the problem has nothing cute about it. In fact, it is killing us, threatening national security and causing a great deal of suffering that doesn't have to happen.
I know how it feels to be in this predicament. I've lost 60 pounds thus far, though I do have another 25 to go. It wasn't easy and I made a lot of mistakes along the way. However, that does give me some knowledge that I can pass along in the hopes that you don't have to learn what I did the hard way.
In this process, you have to keep in mind that eating is good, it's what, when and how much you eat that is the problem. If you try to go without or follow a diet that mainly sticks to one food group, you could develop some serious problems. On the other hand, if you don't lose the weight, you are at risk for another series of problems. Here are a few to look for:
Anemia: Been there, done that twice. Anemia leaves you weak, fatigued and easily bruised. It can be from an iron deficiency or lack of adequate B12. Lean protein, brown rice and other foods can help you avoid this.
Diabetes: Eating a primarily starch diet, being overweight and heredity are all factors in this disorder. If you want to follow a diet, avoid any that make you stick to a limited amount of food choices.
Goiter: A lack of iodine or the ability to absorb it can cause this problem. Your thyroid will become enlarged and may have to be removed. There is a "goiter belt" in the U.S., where the soil does not have enough iodine to keep people healthy. The problem was resolved by adding iodine to salt. Even though we consume to much sodium for the most part, make sure you get enough iodine. Note: Do *not* start taking iodine supplements without speaking to your doctor. This could cause serious health problems.
Heart Disease: Besides the problems of being overweight, some diet plans could lead to heart disease. Low carb diets may be fine for some people, but they aren't ideal for everyone. If you do decide to use this plan, speak to a nutritionist, so you don't end up having to much fat and cholesterol in your food choices.
Osteoporosis: Brittle bones, loss of bone density, these problems are caused by a lack of calcium absorption. Dairy products and some vegetables contain it, but people watching their weight may choose to skip on the dairy. Talk to your doctor about a good calcium supplement if you tend to avoid these foods.
Scurvy: This was once called "the sailor's disease," because those aboard a sailing vessel for long periods of time seldom got much in the way of vitamin C. In fact, if you've ever heard British sailors termed as "Limeys," it's because an intelligent captain began to carry a load of limes on each voyage. The sailors ate the limes and it prevented scurvy.
You don't necessarily have to eat limes, but make sure there is adequate C in your diet. If you don't like or won't eat the foods that have it, ask about a good supplement. I didn't get scurvy, but I did have some clotting problems from lack of this vitamin.
There are, of course, other diseases lack of a balanced diet can cause. It is extremely important that you make sure you are consuming what your body needs to stay healthy. Avoid extreme low calorie diets (tried that, too...) and any that limit you to a few food choices. Always speak to your doctor before beginning a new program. Make sure he or she knows what other health conditions you may have and any medications or supplements you are taking. This will help the two of you decide what the best course is for you.
