7 Negative Effects of Long Term Dieting

When one thinks of dieting, weight loss immediately comes to mind. After all, for most people slimmer is sexier, right? However, people who engage in long-term dieting may suffer at least one of the seven negative effects listed below. Being on a long-term diet does not always guarantee a slimmer, sexier body. Read below to find out about these consequences of dieting for too long:

1 People who continuously use crash diets on a regular basis will develop a tendency to practice their self-will in a few days, and end up overeating or breaking their weight loss plan all of a sudden, eventually leading to a cycle of self-punishment. This is why the first negative effect is a busted self-control.

2 Next, when people have mastered the art of yo-yo dieting, they will lose and gain the pounds. The skin is elastic -once stretched, it is stretched and this will lead to the second negative effect: saggy breasts/ skin.

3 and 4 The third negative effect is having deficiencies of nutrients, which will lead to the fourth negative effect: body complications such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or worse, heart problems. Having a very low-calorie diet will take its toll on the heart and muscles.

5 The fifth effect is paranoia. Even if one has lost weight, the idea that he or she is still dieting will keep the person on edge, always being self-conscious about his or her looks, and about what food to eat or not to eat.

6 Which is why the sixth negative effect is difficulty in stress management. Lack of certain vitamins and minerals, or always being wary of what to eat will most definitely not make the brain unhappy which means insomnia, bad moods, irritability, and even depression.

7 Finally, the seventh effect: missing out. How many times has one declined the chance to eat out with friends and family? How many times has one refused to eat the special home-made cookies made especially by a close loved-one? Eating is not only a means of nutrition, but also a way to socialize and bond with people. Dieting is not supposed to make people suffer but make people better.

As you can see, it is important to be cautious about long-term dieting. The right course of action is to start living healthier, and that means committing to a different, healthier lifestyle, which includes eating only the right amount of food and having regular exercise.

People who engage in long term dieting need to step back and take stock of the reasons why they are dieting. Are there underlying reasons why you cannot control your weight in a healthy way. I am a big believer that weight problems and mental health issues are closely linked. I'm not suggesting that anyone who diets regularly has a mental health problem but research shows clearly that a lot of people with mental health problems struggle to maintain a healthy weight and lifestyle and often go for a quick fix such as a crash diet to 'fix' the problem.
