Use a Ketogenic Diet to Resolve Seizures and Epilepsy

Quantum Brain Healing usually requires nutritional changes to manage epilepsy and seizure disorder. The diet always impacts the course of any disease. Seizures triggered by food allergies will diminish after the food trigger is identified. There are several special diets which may improve epilepsy or seizure. The ketogenic diet is a good diet to try if other therapies are unable to improve the disease.

The ketogenic diet is a high fat, low carbohydrate diet with a moderate to high amount of protein. It can be used to treat epilepsy. It is not an overnight fix. This is a difficult diet and it can moderate electrical activity in the brain if used more than one to two years. This diet is produces an effect similar to starvation and forces the body to burn fat instead of carbohydrates. Calories are strictly controlled so that weight is not lost or gained during the diet. Regular growth and repair of the body continues. This diet is heavily supplemented with vitamins and minerals. It should be done under the care of a registered dietician or physician. Fluids are restricted, so that electrolytes do not get out of balance.

When glucose is not sufficient, the body burns fat. The fat is not completely burned and ketones are formed. The high level of ketones formed seems to reduce or eliminate seizures in many people. People who are unable to control seizure activity can use this diet by other means. People can discontinue this diet after they have been seizure free for a period of approximately two years. This diet seems to alter the seizure threshold with the elevation of ketone levels. In 1998, Johns Hopkins Medical School released a study on the Ketogenic Diet. They showed the diet to significantly help eliminate the seizure activity in approximately one-third of the patients. Other patients showed reduced seizure activity.

In 2005, Emory University School of Medicine recently showed that this diet alters the genes involved in energy metabolism of the brain. This action helps to stabilize neurons when seizure activity occurs. The diet increased the energy production in the hippocampus, helped the brain to become more resistant to reduced glucose levels, and increased the brain's ability to handle metabolism changes. This diet has the potential to treat Alzheimer's and Parkinson's Diseases.

Side effects of the Ketogenic Diet include dehydration, kidney stones, constipation, vomiting, increased cholesterol, lower growth rate, behavior changes, and mood changes. There are other diets to try if this diet is unsuccessful.
