Ten Scientific Facts for Easy Diet Design

Summary

A very high fraction of the advice available on dieting and weight loss is downright bad, including some from physicians and nutritionists. This is largely because dieting, supplements, herbal remedies are essentially unregulated unless serious injury or death has been caused. (Yes, Virginia, the "macrobiotic diet" has caused deaths.) Some diets can help lose weight even though they are based on crackpot theories, such as Dr. Barry Sears' Zone Diet or Atkins diet.

With just a few scientific facts in hand, most people can do far better managing their own health. To offset the growing cost of health care, accept responsibility for your own health maintenance!

Fact Number One: If calories consumed are more/less than calories used, one gains/loses weight. In other words, if it's on your body, it came in through your mouth. Most dieting advice is to make money by providing excuses for people to ignore this basic fact.

Fact Number Two: A small amount of fat satisfies hunger. Unfortunately, Dr. Robert Atkins just did not know when to stop. In fact, low carb is high dumb.

Fact Number Three: A small candy bar can have more calories than a bag of raw vegetables or fresh fruit, and is less filling. Weight control does not require hunger.

Fact Number Four: Common sense is a better and more effective means for weight loss than any magic pills or potions.

Fact Number Five: Moderate exercise, such as walking a mile or two on at least 5 days per week, works with sensible diet at delaying or preventing most scary diseases.

Fact Number Six: Just because knowledge is old does not make it obsolete.

It is true that a lot of obesity is due to using traditional recipes long after modern technology has reduced the need for high energy foods. However, not every thing believed by old-timers is wrong. For example, diets high in red meats really do seem to go with increased rates of various cancers. Many of the traditional foods can be made more healthful simply by reducing and substituting some ingredients.

Fact Number Seven: Avoid overly refined foods, the "white foods". No one needs sugar, white flour, monosodium glutamate, hydrolyzed or texturized protein, mayo, sauce, gravy, salad dressing -- to name just a few. Synthetic meats, such as soy cutlets and turkey substitute, are not as tasty as traditional foods made from the same starting materials. I like pasta, tofu, and temphe, but hated seitan ("wheat meat"), Tofurky, and imitation chops. Of course, sincere vegetarians and animal rights believers are more committed than most folks.

Fact Number 8: Avoid breathing smoke. Tobacco and obesity are the major causes of early death. Before central heating and high-tech engines, smoke inhalation damaged the lungs and bodies of almost everyone to some degree.

Fact Number 9: Eggs, Pasta, and Potatoes have gotten a bum rap. Eat them without butter, cheese, or fatty meats and they are quite healthful. The cholesterol in eggs is less of a health threat than the cholesterol in the body that results from eating a lot of saturated and trans fats.

Fact Number 10: Dieting does not require hunger or martyrdom. The diet plans of Dr. Dean Ornish do seem able to clear arteries, but my parents could not stand to stay on them, even though motivated by coronary heart disease.
