Most of us are aware of the dangers of having too much fat in our diet. Aside from the obvious physical manifestation of weight gain, the risk of contracting chronic diseases and cancer is increased, in addition to a host of harmful effects. Thus, we are always advised to steer away from fat-rich foods as much as possible. However, with the food choices available today, this can be quite difficult; because the foods that we find most appealing are mostly those that are laden with fat, sugar and full of cholesterol. Fortunately, it is still possible to find something that is healthy and tastes good at the same time - a low-fat smoothie.
Smoothies are the healthier versions of the more popular milkshake. Whereas milkshakes contain fat and large amounts of refined sugar, smoothies are full of fiber, vitamins and mineral, and natural sugar. The difference lies in the ingredients. Smoothies are essentially made of fruit mixed with liquid and other flavor enhancers. Sometimes, leafy green vegetables are added to make the drink more nutritious. Other additives such as protein powder and chocolate can be combined with the low-fat smoothie to make it the taste more pleasing. The fruits commonly used to prepare smoothies are bananas, strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, mangoes, peaches and pineapple. Orange and apple juice are common components as well.
Because of the ingredients that go into them, smoothies are low in fat content but high in nutrient value. This is why they are ideal for weight watchers who aim to lose body fat the healthy way. Unlike fad diets which deprive a person of essential nutrients and make him lethargic, regular drinking of a low-fat smoothie will provide sustained energy without adding on the pounds. Further, the fiber in the food gives a feeling of fullness so hunger is curbed. Best of all, they taste good so the person does not feel deprived at all.
An example of a low-fat smoothie recipe has a half pound of cherries, a medium-sized banana, one cup of low-fat chocolate milk and vanilla. Preparation only involves pitting the cherries, slicing the banana, putting all ingredients in a blender and blending until smooth. The total calorie content of a glass of this drink is 218 but only 22 calories is attributed to fat. Moreover, it has only 2.5 grams of fat and 3 milligrams of cholesterol. In contrast, the milkshakes typically found in fast food chains have approximately 500 calories, 14 grams of fat, 72 grams of sugar and 55 milligrams of cholesterol.
Hence, whenever you have a craving for that tall glass of milkshake, why not go for a low-fat smoothie instead? Not only will you be drinking a beverage that is as delicious as a milkshake, you will also be getting essential vitamins and minerals without the guilt. For sure, your body will love you for making the wiser choice.
