Medifast Nutrition - Why It's Much Better Than That of Other Popular Diets

I spent a lot of time researching this diet endorsed by Genie Francis and Kristi Swanson before I finally took the plunge and committed to it. I'm glad I did because I've had a great deal of success, loosing over 75 pounds. One of the things that really swayed me toward this one as opposed to other diets was that the nutrition is really sound.

I knew that low carb diets worked as I had previously lost a bunch of weight on the Atkins diet. However, Atkins ultimately turned out to be disastrous for me because I got tired of eating meat and eggs all of the time and I really worried about the high amount of fat and cholesterol I was getting. However, I was foolish enough to want to see results at any cost.

When I saw that I could eat carb, dessert, and snack type foods on medifast (chocolate shakes, pudding, crackers, oatmeal, cappuccino, etc), I was very intrigued. And when I took a look at the actual nutrition contained, I was shocked and happy that the items are so low in carbohydrates and fat, but so high in protein. The meals are fortified with lots of vitamins and minerals too.

But, then I started to wonder if I could get the same nutrition with slim fast, which I could get right over the counter. (You can get medifast online with no prescription needed, but I didn't know that at the time. And, after a bit of research, I also confirmed that it is not a shake or bar only diet as the others are. It has over 70 food choices, with shakes being just one option.)

To answer this question, I decided to compare the nutrition in both products.

I compared apples to apples and examined both plan's shakes. Slim fast's creamy optima shake has 18 grams of sugar and 25 grams of carbs. In contract, medifast's Dutch chocolate 55 shake has only 6 grams of sugar, 12 grams of carbohydrates, and 11 grams of protein.

This sealed the deal because I know first hand what a huge difference this is. I doubted that my body could get into fat burning mode (ketosis) with all the carbs and sugars in slim fast. Just for kicks, I tasted the optima shake. Although it claimed to have a new and improved taste, it was every bit as chalky as I remembered it from my high school days.

I honestly find the medifast shakes to taste very good, especially when you add fat free syrups or fat free whipped cream. It's easy to discount the ingredients when dieting, but I've learned first hand that sound nutrition and results can coexist.
