How to Lower Your Cholesterol Level

Cholesterol is an amphipathic lipid and as such is an essential structural component of cell membranes of the outer layer of plasma lipoproteins. Lipoproteins transport free cholesterol in the circulation. Cholesteryl ester is a storage form of cholesterol found in most tissues. There are two major types of lipoprotein concerned with cholesterol which are: high density lipoprotein(HDL) and low density lipoprotein(LDL). Low density lipoprotein transports cholesterol and cholesteryl ester into tissues. High density lipoprotein transports cholesterol from tissues to the liver for conversion to bile acids. Cholesterol pathologic process is the genesis of atherosclerosis of vital arteries causing cerebrovascular, coronary and peripheral vascular diseases. Cholesterol is present in tissues and it is a precursor of corticosteroids, sex hormones, bile acids and vitamin D.

Cholesterol does not connote a sickness that many individuals have been led to believe. Cholesterol is a natural products of the human body but excess of of cholesterol leads to pathology (likewise anything taken in excess). The pathology of cholesterol and its advantages depends on its lipoprotein; The ratio of HDL:LDL. The higher the HDL the better and vice versa. Higher HDL means good health while Higher LDL means bad health (atherosclerosis). There are two major sources of cholesterol to the body:Bio-synthesis of cholesterol by body tissues and Diet.

Ways to lower your Cholesterol level

Exercise:-Doing regular exercise daily helps in reducing cholesterol level in the body

Diet:- Grains, Fish rich in the element called Omega3, like Salmon and Tuna

Fruits & leafy vegetables, Nuts, Juices, etc. are low in cholesterol

Stop consuming saturated fats but consume polyunsaturated fats.

Try avoiding margarine, eggs and butter in your regular diet.

Prefer using natural-based oils like corn, vegetable, olive, etc. to other cooking oil.

Take high quality vitamin & mineral supplements in your diet like Vitamin E that improves blood circulation; Vitamin C & Vitamin B3 that lower the high cholesterol levels, etc.

Stop bad habits like smoking and drinking etc

Natural products:- Consume natural products like garlic, fish oils containing (omega-3-fatty acids) like salmon, tuna etc

Synthetic products:- There are pharmaceutical drugs called statins e.g atorvastatin, fluvastatin which help in lowering cholesterol level in the body. Taking drugs is not advisable because they do have side effects but consult a physician before taking drugs.
