Almonds Lower Bad Cholesterol - And Promote Weight Loss Too!

Recent studies have added another reason for people to use more almonds on their salads, snack, or on their cereals. Researchers revealed that almonds lower bad cholesterol while it increases good cholesterol. Above all, almonds promote weight loss.

Researchers discovered that people who eat a diet rich in almonds lost more weight than people who eat high-carbohydrate diet having the same amount of calories. The same findings also disclosed that people who eat low-carbohydrates lost more weight than those who eat low-fat diet.

In a study, researchers monitored 65 overweight and obese individuals for 24 weeks. Of the participants, 70% suffers from type 2 diabetes. One group ate a 1000-calorie liquid with 3 ounce of almonds supplements diet per day. The other group ate the same liquid diet but supplemented instead on a mix of complex carbohydrates. The two diets were equivalent in calories and protein but different in fat value. Apart from liquid diet, participants could also have salads with lemon juice or vinegar dressing.

The diet containing almonds contained 39% total fat including 25% from heart-healthy mono-unsaturated fats. The non-almond diet contained 18% total fat with 5% from monounsaturated fats. The results of the study were published on the International Journal of Obesity.

People who were fed on diets with almonds experience 18% reduction in weight and body mass index, a measurement of weight according to height. The other group that did not supplement on almonds only lost 11% of their total body weight.

In a separate study of 20 women who were mostly overweight, 344 calories worth of almonds were given to 20 women daily for a period of 10 weeks before they were instructed to eat their normal daily diets for a period of 10 weeks. The study reported that women had no significant weight gain during the period that they consumed almonds.

Researchers found that a diet that includes a handful of almonds reduced the LDL cholesterol by 4.4%. When their diets had two handfuls of almonds, the LDL cholesterol dropped by 9.4% while diets that do not promote almonds but rather supplemented on low fat, whole-wheat muffin, there was no indication of changes in LDL level.
