People are still eating too much of the wrong things. It seems everyone is shouting about fat in diet these days. Either diets are very high in fat (Atkins) or very, very low (Rice Diet).
These drastic measures for weight loss are quite obviously not the healthiest. A person who uses this type of diet may lose weight but there is little chance that they will be able to keep the pounds off once the diet program has ended.
The truth is, if you want to keep the weight off permanently you must change your lifestyle. This article is designed to help you make the right choices by giving you some specific advice on acquiring that healthy, vibrant lifestyle so you can forget all the excessive fat in diet talk!
Fat is Not Always Bad.
Many of the 'famous' diets adhered to these days claim that fat is bad and you should cut it out completely. This is ridiculous. When body fat percentage gets too low, energy levels and exercise performance decline.
Fat is an essential part of a quality nutrition program. Our body needs fat to aid growth and development, cushion our organs and maintain cell membranes. Also, if we don't take in enough fat we cannot absorb the important fat-soluble vitamins A,D,E and K. The key is to balance your fat intake and focus on the 'good' fats. Keeping fat in diet is a good thing - but make sure it's the good stuff!
Limit your consumption of foods such as sausages, pastries, cakes and biscuits. These all tend to contain high levels of saturated fat which raises cholesterol and can block up the arteries to the heart. Saturated fats include Hydrogenated Fats or Trans-Fats made from plant oils and fats that have been heated and pressure-processed.
Margarine is one of the biggest culprits for these types of fats. Hydrogenated fats are created when an oil that is largely unsaturated, such as corn oil, has hydrogen added to it, causing fat to become more solid at room temperature.
They are used to prolong the shelf life of a product and should be avoided at all costs - they have absolutely no nutritional value. This kind of fat in diet routines is a disaster - you will not see any positive results unless you cut out all hydrogenated fats.
Ensure to include foods in your diet which contain unsaturated fats such as nuts, seeds and avocados. Oily fish, such as salmon, mackerel and herring are high in omega 3 fatty acids which help reduce the risk of heart disease and stimulate blood circulation.
Use extra virgin olive oil when cooking as opposed to sun flower oil and you should ideally be limiting fat intake to approximately 20-25 percent of calories - just make sure it is made up primarily of those 'good' fats.
Watch Out For The Sugar!
If you want to lose weight then you have to cut down your sugar intake. Although sugar is a good source of quick energy it provides very few nutrients, so processed sugars should only be a very small part of a balanced diet.
Some foods that you might not expect to have sugar added to them often contain lots, for example breakfast cereals, cereal bars and tinned spaghetti and baked beans. Fizzy drinks are one of the worst culprits - a can of cola can contain 35g of sugar! Cut out the sugar and the fat in diet and you'll be off to a great start.
Losing weight starts with a good quality diet, be sure to incorporate carbohydrate, protein, fat, vitamins, minerals salts and fiber in appropriate proportions. If you can commit to this you will see a vast improvement in your shape over a short space of time. Remember don't believe everything you hear or read - fat in diet is necessary, just be sure its of the right kind and in the correct quantity!
