10 Low Cal Nutritional Superstars

Here is a list of 10 of the nutritional superstars we should regularly incorporate into our diets, and most of us more than likely don't have half of them on hand. All are low cal with big benefits.

Fortunately, these are not exotic items we have to hunt down. All of them are easy to obtain at the local market:

Cinnamon

A recent study in 2003 found that cinnamon may have a beneficial effect on blood sugar. Other studies have indicated that cinnamon may have antibacterial and anti-fungal properties. It is active against the fungus that causes yeast infections and the bacteria responsible for stomach ulcers. It is also believed to help cholesterol.

Sardines

Sardines are loaded with Omega-3 and calcium. They also have B vitamins, iron, and magnesium.

Blueberries

Fresh or frozen, blueberries have an amazing number of benefits. Among them are they aid in weight loss, improve the memory and learning, improve overall brain function, prevent urinary tract infections, lower cholesterol, and aid in cancer prevention.

Garlic

Garlic reduces inflammation in the body, and as a result is also an anti-carcinogen. Garlic protects the heart by improving blood flow through the body, and lowers cholesterol. Garlic has powerful antibacterial and antiviral properties that help fight disease and is even a powerful antibiotic.

Pomegranate juice

Pomegranate juice appears to lower blood pressure and is loaded with antioxidants. Also, according to a new study, it appears that the antioxidants contained in pomegranate juice may help reduce the formation of fatty deposits on artery walls. Antioxidants are compounds that limit cell damage.

Prunes

Not considered the most attractive choice, but remember prunes were once plums, so prunes provide the same benefits as the plums would which include; they are antioxidant, anti-cancer, they boost our immune systems, they help lower cholesterol and as most of us know, they make a good laxative.

Turmeric

Another superstar used in many eastern Indian dishes, turmeric is a spice that has antioxidant and anti-cancer properties. You can add turmeric to rice, eggs, or vegetable dishes.

Cabbage

Cabbage is chocked full of compounds called phytonutrients which in addition to working as effective antioxidants to repair cell damage and disarm free-radicals, cleanse our bodies by encouraging the production of detoxification enzymes. This eliminates substances that could be harmful from the body.

Pumpkin

Fresh or canned, pumpkin is low in calories and high in fiber. Pumpkin also stimulates the immune system with a high vitamin A content.

Swiss Chard

Swiss chard is one of the leafy green vegetables. Swiss chard is one of the most powerful anti-cancer foods due to its combination of phytochemicals, chlorophyll, other plant pigments, and soluble fiber. It is also rich in vitamins, A, C, E, potassium, and calcium. And one cup of chard (only 35 calories) provides us with about 15 percent of our daily requirement for dietary fiber.
