Ways to Lower Cholesterol Without Taking Statins

There are dozens of ways to lower cholesterol. Taking cholesterol medicine is not one of my favorites; there are too many risks. Here are my suggestions. They have worked for me and members of my family, as well as hundreds of other people who have written letters and posted reviews on the internet.

Change Your Diet

The relevant dietary factors are not limited to cutting out cholesterol-containing foods. In fact, the latest studies indicate that people who regularly eat eggs, which were long considered "no-no's", actually have healthier blood profiles than people who don't.

No one is saying that eating more eggs is one of the ways to lower cholesterol. But, if they replace donuts or breakfast cakes containing partially hydrogenated vegetable oils, then they would probably be better for you.

Just because the food label says low-fat does not mean it is good for you. If it were not for all of the unnatural ingredients developed by food manufacturers, there might be no need for cholesterol medicine.

Partially hydrogenated vegetable oils, including soy and any of the others that might normally be healthy, are trans-fatty acids. The body lacks the enzymes necessary to efficiently metabolize trans-fatty acids. Because of that, they stay in the bloodstream for very long periods of time.

The longer they hang around, the more likely they are to become oxidized and clog the arteries. There are dietary changes that could help. Cutting out trans-fats is simply the most important.

Change Your Lifestyle

If you drink alcohol excessively, don't get much exercise or smoke cigarettes, then you have three natural ways to lower cholesterol. Cut out the alcohol. Get more exercise. And quit smoking. It seems odd to me that doctors would prescribe cholesterol medicine to people that drink, smoke or are physically inactive. Of course, some people are lazy and really only want a drug.

Take Some Good Dietary Supplements

Research has revealed that nutrients and compounds found in some foods are just as good as cholesterol medicine. In fact, statin drugs, which are commonly prescribed for the condition, are present in a kind of Asian mushroom called the Oyster mushroom.

Pharmaceutical company reps would never tell you that eating oyster mushrooms is one of the ways to lower cholesterol. In the US, food manufacturers are not allowed to say things like that. If a food has medicinal activity, it is supposed to be classified as a drug. The effective compounds are supposed to be identified, isolated, extracted and concentrated by drug companies. Apparently, we are not smart enough to take care of our own health.

One of the drawbacks of cholesterol medicine of the statin drug type is that it inhibits the production of an important antioxidant called coenzyme Q10. Without coenzyme Q10, the muscles become weak and die. There have been numerous incidences of adverse reactions that could have only been caused by the statins.
