Cholesterol Control - Things You Should Know

The problem of cholesterol is quite common among those in their adult years. It is actually faced by millions of people in the world - men and women alike. However, some people don't really understand what it is about. The truth is, cholesterol plays an essential role in the body. Before you try to find the best cholesterol control measures, you must first understand what it is about and the many different kinds of cholesterol.

Residing in the cell membranes of your body, cholesterol is a fat-like substance known also as lipids. Though the body will synthesize most cholesterol, some of it will be ingested as a food component.

To manage your cholesterol level, you should know that there are two types of cholesterol: the good cholesterol and the bad one. The bad cholesterol - also known as LDL - is known to cause heart diseases and stroke. The good cholesterol - also known as HDL - is the one responsible for producing much need nutrients and hormones for the body. HDL also helps creating and maintaining body cells.

Since cholesterol isn't soluble, keeping it at healthy level can be quite hard to achieve. The best solution is, however, to alter your lifestyle completely into a healthier one. When you are living healthily and paying attention to what you eat, it will help manage your cholesterol level better.

Following a balanced diet is one of the most effective ways to lower your cholesterol level - so you should choose your diet carefully. Understand that eating foods that are high in fat isn't good for your health - as they contain a high level of bad cholesterol. When you eat unhealthily, you can be sure that it will make your cholesterol level go through the roof. You should be eating foods that are low relatively low in saturated fat. However, be aware that your body still needs unsaturated fat in small amount - so do not shut them off completely.

Fish and lean red meat would make the perfect choice of food for your diet. They contain a good amount of protein that can help build muscle. If possible, consume low fat dairy products - as this will make it easier for you to control the cholesterol level.

If required, you can take some medications and supplements to help lower your cholesterol level. Just to be safe, make sure you consult with your doctor before taking any over-the-counter medications though.
