High protein low carbohydrates diets have been widely promoted in recent years. The diets are found on the principle that you eat high levels of protein so that 30%to 50% of the calories that your body burns come from protein. The American Heart Association, and the National Cholesterol Foundation indicate that a smaller amount of calories should be derived from protein.

With restricting the carbohydrates so low on these high protein low carbohydrates diets, you are putting your body into a different metabolic state in which the body now burns it's own fat instead of the carbohydrates it would normally burn., promoting weight loss. The medical profession calls this state ketosis. When the body is in this state, you are likely to eat less than you otherwise would.

Ketosis can also cause some health problems such as kidney failure, gout, and kidney stones. Consuming too much protein can put a strain on your kidneys.

High protein low carbohydrates diets are also associated with high levels of cholesterol which in turn causes heart disease.

Excessive protein is also linked to osteoporosis due to a production of higher than normal amounts of calcium.

Cancer can be another problem with high protein low carbohydrates diets, because carbohydrates contain high amounts of nutrients, minerals, vitamins, and anti-oxidants the body needs, and is not getting an adequate supply of. Your diet must contain adequate amounts of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. You fulfill your protein with these foods and you will reduce your risk of cancer. These high protein low carbohydrate plans do not provide for a high intake of these foods

Another factor that you need to consider is the probably of weight gain when you get off the diet., due to fat cells accumulating more fat. This could cause more craving for high carbohydrate foods which will add weight back on.

Remember your body is like a machine, it needs the right combination of foods to operate at its best. When you go on a high protein low carbohydrate diet, the correct combinations are going to get disrupted, and the longer you are on it, the more risk you are taking that something serious is going to happen.
