High Cholesterol Medication - Are Cholesterol Lowering Drugs Worth Considering?

High Cholesterol Medication may be prescribed by your doctor if he finds that you have an abnormal cholesterol level that can endanger you heart. This is usually the case if either one of these happens: blood test shows that your LDL (bad cholesterol) count is higher than 160 mg/dL, or if your LDL to HDL (good cholesterol) ratio is lower than the ideal 4.4:1.

There are many brands of high cholesterol medication, with the most common names being Zocor, Lipitor, Pravachol, Mevacor and Crestor. These medicines are generally called statin drugs, and generally they work by inhibiting your liver from producing too much cholesterol inside your body, thus causing the effect of cholesterol lowering in your blood.

However, treatment with statin drugs have many risks associated with them. One of the most frightening effect is muscle breakdown. This is when the medicine slowly but surely melt down the tissues of your muscles, and flush them down your kidneys. It causes your whole body to become weaker in general, and the most horrifying effect is when the flushed muscle tissues clog your kidneys. Kidney failure may happen, which is a fatal disease that can increase your risk of death.

To let you have a picture of what is the actual condition that may happen when you take high cholesterol medication, let me tell you about my story when I was forced to take them by my doctor.

In 2008, I took my first medical check up and found out that overall I am in okay condition, except that my total cholesterol level was 376 mg/dL. My LDL alone was 260! My doctor instantly prescribed me with a month's dose of daily 20 mg Zocor. I was so shocked of this condition, it took me several days to calm down.

Then, I began looking for ways to help my condition. I browsed the internet a lot, and found many useful materials. I also consulted other doctors for their advice what should be done on my part.

The result is a change into a more natural lifestyle... and a lifesaver.

I started eating more fruits, vegetables and fish. I stopped consuming dairy products, red meat, fat and poultry altogether for two months. I started taking vitamins and supplements, and jogged 4 miles every Saturday morning religiously. The exercise is as necessary as the diet, because it helps to raise HDL.

I was doing all these while still taking the medicine from my doctor.

It was during my Saturday morning jogging sessions that I started to feel the muscle breakdown effect. My legs will not stop aching for over two weeks just from doing one jogging session. In normal case, the aching will go away after 3 days...

And the aching was so intense, at one point I could barely walk down the stairs without feeling like all the joints in my body were falling apart.

Anyhow, I persisted with the strict diet and the painful routine jogging (because of the aching that wouldn't go away). All these efforts brought my total cholesterol level down from 376 to 121 in only two short months! And I can guarantee you that the Zocor my doctor prescribed me was the least important factor in this amazing drop of cholesterol level.

How can I be so sure? In the medicine's own official website, it is mentioned that even the drop of 100 points in total cholesterol measurement is a rare case for people who are taking 4 times my dose.

My level dropped 255 points. Personally, this is the highest drop I've ever known. It can't be because of Zocor. It's my diet and optimal lifestyle change for sure.

However, even with the relatively low dosage of Zocor, I can feel the muscle breakdown effect right away, only within days after I started taking it.

After my numbers recover to a normal healthy level, I stopped taking the medication. Miraculously, the aching stopped only several days after I stopped the medication. I was thankful to God that my muscles and kidneys are still in good health. I could only imagine the wreck this drug could bring to people who has been on it for years.

As a closing note, let me tell you the truth: what kind of vegetables, fruits and vitamins I took was the most important key in my success. Eat the wrong kind of them, and you won't be reducing your cholesterol levels at all.
