Raw Food Diet In Sickness And Health

For some, a raw food diet is an alternative to modern medicine. It is a testament to Hippocrates' "Let your food be your medicine..." A change in diet is often times the first prescription of a doctor whether it is more water intake, more green leafy vegetables and less red meat or fatty foods. Almost overnight she gave up what most of us live on: bread, pasta and rice. Her food is composed of fresh fruits and vegetables, shakes/juices, sprouted beans, nuts, seeds and legumes and seaweeds. She lived on a strict diet containing raw vegetarian foods for two months. Not only did she feel better with her newly acquired diet but also the lumps were gone.

The misconception is that a raw food diet is only composed of fresh uncooked vegetables such as the salad. In her menu you will still find grilled tofu, baked potatoes, brown rice, whole wheat pasta and homemade bread, vegan bread spreads, tofunaise, pesto and other cooked food. Yes cooked food, you read it right. It means 75% of your food intake is raw, the rest can be slightly heated or undergo minimal cooking.

Fruit shake for breakfast and boiled sweet potatoes topped with honey. Lunch could be pasta with freshly made pesto, salad and fruit juices. Dinner would be homemade bread, grilled tofu complimented by juicy tomatoes and crispy green lettuce. Some days you could have brown rice, alternating with pasta and bread. One could snack on sprouted seeds and nuts blended with a banana and soymilk or better yet just sink your teeth into a ripe refreshing melon. Cut up apples, mangoes and whatever favorite fruits you like and snack on them in between meals. These are healthy meals that anyone can easily prepare.

Few months on raw food diet has given her the opportunity to modify a strict raw food diet (which commenced upon the scare of cancer) to a more practical one. She imposes on healthy dinners by always preparing something with raw fruits and veggies such as healthy salads of various kinds! You need not be radical but try to make these alternative healthy meals work for you without causing nuisance to the whole household. Prod kids with healthy snacks and entice their curiosity with cooling shakes to change their perception of healthy eating.

We are very fortunate to have abundance of fresh raw foods easily available to us these days. All it requires is a little creativity and willingness to have healthy eating habits. Once some of the basic ideas about raw food diet are mastered, it is very easy to adapt those ideas to other food varieties.
