Low Carb Problems - How Safe Is It?

It's important, when you select a diet, that you know exactly what to expect. What are the pitfalls? Could the diet cause you harm? Let's take a look at low carb diets.

What is a carb? "Carb" is short for carbohydrate, and it is a hydrate of carbon. That probably doesn't tell you very much. You're probably more familiar with starch and sugar. This isn't inaccurate. In the diet, that's what they are.

Here's something to consider; there are good carbs and bad carbs. Getting rid of all of them in your diet could cause deficiencies in many vitamins and minerals. They're usually low in fiber as well.

What are good carbs? Whole grains are good carbs. They're high in fiber, antioxidants, magnesium and iron. Fresh and lightly cooked fruits and vegetables are good, as well. Again, they're full of fiber, vitamins and minerals. Why is this important?

Fiber does a lot of stuff. One thing is they are filling. You'll eat fewer calories and less fat if you fill up on foods high in fiber. You've probably already heard that it can lower cholesterol and prevent heart disease. Skipping out on the fiber is a bad idea, and animal products don't have any.

Vitamins, minerals and other nutrients are important for many reasons, and I don't have to go into the reasons. What you might not know is that it's best if they come from plants and not from chemicals. It's easier for your body to use them.

What are bad carbs? Processed foods tend to become bad carbs. You can eat rice, but white rice is a bad carb. Instead, go for the brown rice. Bread is usually on the bad list, but whole grain bread shouldn't be. Processed sugars, including many desserts and any alcohol are all bad carbs.

Eliminating all carbs is a dangerous thing to do. Instead, choose your carbs wisely. All meat all the time is likely to lead to many problems. Here are three.

Gout: High protein diets include a lot of purines, which in turn becomes uric acid. Crystals of this waste product end up in your blood stream, then get deposited into joints. Believe me, this is not something you want to happen. You'll go to bed fine and wake up not able to put your foot on the ground.

Heart disease: Most people who eat low carb diets depend largely on animal protein. Unfortunately, that increases your cholesterol levels, which in turn increases your risk of cardiovascular disease.

Kidney disease: Your kidneys are the filtering system. Increased uric acid in your blood stream can increase the workload, and it will eventually cause damage.

I hope this information helps you choose a diet that's right for you. It is possible to lose weight without extremes in any diet, if you know what you're eating. The best tool you can use is your brain.
