Treatments For High Cholesterol

For the thousands of people that have been diagnosed with high cholesterol there are a number of treatments for them to consider. High cholesterol medicine is only one of those options and even with the use of medicine other options should also be used in partnership to bring about a more permanent solution to the problem.

High cholesterol is most often the result of a diet that is too high in saturated fats and not enough exercise, when this is the case diet and exercise should always be the primary treatment for the condition. By making a lifestyle change you are employing a permanent solution to the problem that not only does not have side effects but will make the rest of your body feel much healthier as well.

Adopting a diet that is low in saturated fats, high in fruits and vegetables, and includes Omega 3s is your first and best defense from high cholesterol. Consuming ample amounts of plant sterols and fiber will help to reduce your cholesterol and will improve your circulation and coronary health. If you smoke, quit, smoking can cause a rise in cholesterol as well. Include daily exercise that alternates weight bearing exercises with aerobic exercises, this has been shown to cause significant decreases in LDL.

If adopting a healthier life style does not lower your cholesterol then before you start taking high cholesterol medicine check with your doctor about possible medical conditions that can raise your cholesterol level. Thyroid disease and diabetes both can cause elevated cholesterol levels and treating these conditions can often cause LDL levels to return to normal.

If you have really high cholesterol or it is resistant to natural methods to control it, you may need to take high cholesterol medicine at least for a time until you can get your cholesterol under control. Be sure to continue to eat a healthy diet and exercise even if you are on medication because this will only make it better, and reduce the amount of medication you will need to take.
