Can A High Protein Low Carbohydrate Diet Make You Lose Weight?

Following a high protein low carb diet plan can help us lose weight, but can be also detrimental to our health in various ways. Many people who follow this form of diet often find that they suffer digestive problems. Some have also had kidney disorders and a common problem associated with this diet plan is bad breath.

So what can we do to ensure we lose those unwanted pounds? The key is to try and simplify weight loss. What we really need to do to shed those pounds is to eat less and exercise more. If we are determined to lose weight we need to focus on getting much more active. On average, we walk 5000 steps daily or even less, we need to increase this to a minimum of 10,000 steps per day.

We have all been confused and misled by diet experts over the years. They advise us to eat more protein, and avoid eating dairy produce. They suggest that we restrict egg consumption to one per week. Following this advice, they then decide that eggs are not a prime cause of cholesterol, and we should include more in our diet. Yes we need to change our diet but where do we start?

Other than following the high protein low carbohydrate trend, we need to examine our diet as a whole. Are we taking note of the GI index of the foods we eat, and do we religiously eat our five portions of fruit and vegetables daily?

Many studies have revealed that eating foods that are low on the GI index will boost our energy levels as well as lift our mood. Eating carbohydrates lift our mood because they cause the release of serotonin, a calming hormone. Why would we opt for avoiding carbohydrates and be moody and miserable?

By eating foods low on the GI index, serotonin and energy will be released slowly and steadily to keep us functioning on a level. We will feel so much healthier without having the hyper, jittery sensations associated with eating too much sugar.

We should try to avoid sugary foods such as biscuits, cakes and other high GI foods, as sugar can attack our immune system and could even feed cancer. We should try not to eat white bread, instead we should opt for whole meal or granary breads, which are high fibre and rich in essential vitamins and minerals.

We should also be aware that some low fat foods, rice cakes for example, release glucose quickly. This extra energy, if not used up, will be stored in the form of fat within the body. It pays to think before we eat what we think is a low fat snack.

Finally, we need to establish that although following a high protein low carbohydrate diet may help us to lose weight, but it may cause us problems in our long-term health and wellbeing.
