What Causes High Cholesterol?

Cholesterol is a necessary element in the body which enables the correct functions of cells, but what causes high cholesterol? First you need to understand exactly what it is. Your blood carries the cholesterol around the body so it can perform its duties. This carried around with proteins and the combination of the two are called lipoproteins. Of these, there are three different types.

Low density Lipoprotein - known as LDL cholesterol. This is the 'bad' type.
High density Lipoprotein - known as HDL. This is the 'good' type which provides protection.
Triglycerides - these are found in fatty foods, dairy produce and meats. The body can also produce these.

Too much in your blood is harmful to the body, and can put you at a higher risk of contracting certain health problems such as heart disease.

Main causes - which are avoidable

The biggest culprit of what causes high cholesterol is eating a large amount of saturated fat. Being overweight, eating a high quantity of fatty or sugary foods or drinking too much alcohol will all raise the levels in your blood.
Smoking has a considerable effect on the amount of LDL cholesterol in your blood stream.
Leading a sedentary lifestyle, or who spend a great deal of their life sitting or lying down, tend to have a significantly high LDL level and low HDL level.

Other causes - which are not avoidable

Some people are genetically pre-disposed to the condition - this is known as familial hyperlipidaemia. If this is the case, even if you eat a healthy diet then the levels in your blood may be high.
Men are more likely to suffer from high levels than women.
As you age, you are likely to have higher levels.
Women who suffer from an early menopause are susceptible to higher levels than women who do not.

As you can see, the best way of helping yourself is to lead a healthy lifestyle; eat a good diet and take regular exercise, cut out smoking and only drink alcohol in moderation. This way you will give yourself the best possible chance of cutting down your personal risk of what causes high cholesterol.
