Cholesterol and Its Effect on Love Handles

When you look at magazines and on TV, they're constantly reminding you that too much cholesterol is bad for you. While this is true, this topic is still controversial because the link with heart disease and cholesterol has to do with blood cholesterol and heart disease, rather than dietary cholesterol and heart disease. Surprisingly, only 15% of blood cholesterol is from the diet, and the rest of the cholesterol we make in our bodies by the liver or other cells.

Now here's what we know about cholesterol. The body needs cholesterol. For instance, the brain, nervous system, and all cells require some cholesterol. Also, cholesterol is vital for creating various hormones, vitamin D and helping with the digestion of fats. The largest amounts of cholesterol are found in red meats, eggs, dairy products, and some shellfish. Regardless of how much cholesterol is in your diet, the body continuously makes cholesterol everyday. However, the body does try and regulate how much it creates in response to the individual's cholesterol diet.

Usually cholesterol stays constant level throughout life, however this level may increase with age. Usually, a diet high in polyunsaturated fats is associated with low levels of blood cholesterol. And diets that are high in saturated fat usually tend to increase the amount of cholesterol down within the blood. These high levels of cholesterol in the blood are associated with problems such as heart disease.

Cholesterol can also appear as fat deposits in and around arteries. No one really knows why the body deposits cholesterol in such a manner, but it can produce what's called atherosclerosis. Sclerosis can start early in life, and may take years and years before posing problems. Recent studies have shown that atherosclerosis can be slowed with various diets. A diet high in cholesterol will cause the atherosclerosis lesion to be more aggressive and problematic. However, a diet low in cholesterol will actually change the type of cells surrounding the lesion making it less are problematic later in life.

Other studies have shown that a diet high in cholesterol can add fat to your body. Now this obviously doesn't come as much of a surprise. Many people say that after eating a large meal that the fat will be just packed onto their sides. So if you want to lose your love handles, try eating less fat in your diet.

Unfortunately, some people find out about their atherosclerosis a little too late, which eventually leads to heart disease, and many times a heart attack. So although the topic of cholesterol may still be a little controversial, the amount a studies showing that a high cholesterol diet can cause heart problems should be enough to persuade people to start eating healthier.
