Shocking Report - Is Your Cholesterol Too Low?

Your first question might be, can cholesterol levels be too low? With all the talk about how important it is to have lower cholesterol, it's hard to believe that you can have cholesterol levels too low. There is evidence that having very low cholesterol can reduce serotonin levels in the brain possibly causing depression and anxiety. It is unfortunate that the dangers of low cholesterol are far less publicized.

Now, before you get too excited about it, you should know that a normal low-fat low-cholesterol diet will not produce levels that are too low in normal individuals. If your levels are too low, it should be a warning sign that your body is not producing cholesterol like it should and you should consult with your doctor as soon as possible or you may be taking the advice of lowering cholesterol too seriously. If you are taking heavy doses of medication and eating a no-fat diet, you could say you are taking things a little too seriously!

Here is a list of possible causes of very low cholesterol:

Overactive thyroid gland (hyperthyroidism) Liver disease Malabsorption Manganes deficiency Malnutrition Poor nutrient absorption

With these causes you could draw a conclusion that perhaps it is poor health that is the cause of cholesterol levels being too low rather than low cholesterol levels being the cause of poor health. At this point, there are no studies that provide solid conclusions as to which causes what. However, you can't ignore the fact that there are links to undesireable health conditions in very low cholesterol individuals.

So, with any health regimen, your focus should be on moderation. When it comes to cholesterol levels, the best place to be is in the middle. Where is that? Total cholesterol levels should be less than 200 mg/dL and LDL cholesterol should be below 100 mg/dL. Right in the middle would be at around 140 to 150 mg/dL total cholesterol and about 70 mg/dL LDL cholesterol.

As always, consult your doctor about any question or concerns you might have about cholesterol to get appropriate information regarding your specific situation.
