Low Fat Dieting - Is it a Healthy Solution?

Low fat dieting was considered the best way to lose weight and gain better health. Although limiting fat intake, specifically trans fat and other saturated fats has its benefits, following a diet that's extremely low in fat may actually do more harm then good. In order for the body to function properly some level of fat is needed and holding fast to a very low fat diet may cause problems when it comes to overall health. What problems can this type of diet present to your health?

Problem with low fat dieting: May not necessarily prevent heart disease.

Medical professionals once upon a time dogmatically promoted low fat dieting as the best prevention for heart disease. This was based on the premise that participating in such a diet would lower you overall cholesterol level. While this may be true, here's where the potential hazard lies, a diet extremely low in fat not only lowers LDL (the bad cholesterol), but it also lowers HDL (the good cholesterol) and a high HDL has actually been shown to reduce the risk of heart disease. Evidence suggests that a diet extremely low in fat can increase triglyceride levels when you begin with this type of diet.

A compelling study published by the National Institute of Health in 2006 showed that adoption of a diet extremely low in fat had no noticeable effect on heart disease or risk of stroke. Further studies have supported these results. Taking these facts into consideration it looks as though a diet very low in fat isn't all it's cracked up to be in connection with preventing heart disease.

Additional problems: It may not be the best solution for weight loss.

Of course a low fat diet must be the solution for weight loss, right? When comparing three diet plans for losing weight; the Mediterranean diet, an Atkins style low carb diet, and a low fat diet; the low fat diet turned out to be the least effective for weight loss. Not only did people following the Mediterranean and Atkins diets lose more weight, but they showed a higher increase in their HDL (the good cholesterol) levels, which points to the fact that a diet that is very low in fat may not be as healthy as was previously considered by the medical community years ago.
