Lower Cholesterol, the Good, the Bad and the Ugly

First, let's look at the science. A lipoprotein is a biochemical assembly whose prime function is to transport cholesterol or fats around the body in our blood. There are specific kinds of lipoproteins in your blood, and each affects cholesterol in a different way, understanding this will help you achieve your goal for lower cholesterol.

The Good

High density lipoproteins (HDL) are our "good" cholesterol. Remember, "H" for healthy. It is the good cholesterol that collects bad cholesterol in our blood; brings it back to the liver for disposal. So, the higher the level of HDL cholesterol you have, the better.

The Bad

Conversely, low density lipoproteins (LDH) are our "bad" cholesterol. Remember, "L" for lousy. LDL carries cholesterol from the liver to the cells of the body and is also responsible for the buildup of plaque on the walls of our arteries. Other contenders here include VLDL (low density lipoproteins) and Triglyceride. These are also types of fats carried in our blood scream and can result from excess calories, alcohol or sugar which the liver convert to fats stored throughout our body.

The Ugly

The bottom line is simply. The more LDL there is in the blood, the greater the risk to you of heart disease or stoke. If your levels of HDL are also too low, you are also increasing your risk of heart disease or stoke. Major health risks maybe associated with having high cholesterol. Too much cholesterol in the blood causes plaque (a thick, hard deposit) that forms in the body's arteries narrowing the space for good blood flow to the heart. Over time, this accumulation of plaque is linked to heart disease. Chest pain or angina can result when not enough oxygen-carrying blood reaches the heart because of the amount of plaque buildup. If the hearts coronary arteries are completely blocked of any blood supply the result is a heart attack.

Now the Good News
