Cut down on the cholesterol content -- Cholesterol is other wise known as low density lipoproteins and if found in excess in the blood stream can be dangerous. Choose low fat foods -- One can reduce on the consumption of butter and margarine as they are good sources of trans fat and are very harmful. Removal of the fat from the meat is a good option to reduce fat intake to about 10%. Lean meats are very good source of proteins and contain less fat and can be consumed without any problems. Very good sources of low fat products are olive oil and canola oil. Lard, butter, cocoa butter which is an ingredient in the chocolates, cotton-seed oil, palm oil, cream sauce, gravy, bacon fat are few of the examples of high fat food substances.

Choose food with higher protein contents -- Egg whites, cold water fish containing Omega-3 fatty acids, skimmed milk which contains only 1% of fat in it, skinless poultry are few examples of good sources of proteins.

Raw vegetables and fruits are also good sources -- Canned vegetables which are packed in water or some juice, fresh vegetables and fruits, Vegetables which are low in sodium contents are best source. Coconut, fried vegetables and frozen fruits which has added sugar are to be avoided.

Intake of whole grains should be more -- Anything that is made up of whole grains is best for the heart. Oatmeal, Whole grain Pasta, Cereals which are high in fiber content are all good sources to reduce risk of heart diseases.

Reducing the size of the meals -- One should have a track of how much they are eating on daily basis because it would result in an increased calories leading to increased levels of cholesterol and fat content in the body.

Planned intake of food on daily basis -- There is nothing like a planned diet. A well ahead plan of what to eat for the next week would be a good practice.

Don't restrict too much from having your favorite food items -- By working on the above points one should not forget that their craving is also important. They can treat themselves once in a while when they are feeling like eating junk food with high fat contents. But this should not distract from the daily planned diet routine.
