Low Fat Protein Diet - Not Such a Good Idea

This or that low fat protein diet have been promoted as one strategy for successful weight loss for a long time. Variations of these eating plans have been popular since the 1960s, such as the well know Atkins one.

This way of eating offer a wide range in protein food choices, can be restrictive in other food choices (such as carbohydrates), and often provide structured eating plans. This type meal planning often promotes misconceptions about carbohydrates, insulin resistance, ketosis, and fat burning as tools for weight loss.

Although a low fat protein diet may not be harmful for most healthy people, for a short period of time, there are no long-term scientific studies to support long-term efficacy and safety. These eating plans are generally associated with higher intakes of total fat, saturated fat, and cholesterol because animal products primarily provide the protein.

With this way of eating, weight loss is initially high due to fluid loss associated with reduced carbohydrate intake, overall caloric restriction, and ketosis-induced appetite suppression. Beneficial effects on blood lipids and insulin resistance are due to the reduction in weight, not to the change in caloric composition.

Supporters of this way of eating, promise successful results by encouraging high-protein food choices that are usually restricted in other diets. This provides initial palatability, an attractive alternative to other weight-reduction diets, which may not have worked for a variety of reasons for many individuals.

These eating plans are not recommended because they restrict healthful foods that provide essential nutrients. They also do not provide the variety of foods needed to adequately meet daily nutritional needs. Individuals who follow these diets are therefore at a risk of compromised vitamin and mineral intake. This can lead to deficiencies, as well as potential cardiac, renal, bone, and liver abnormalities.

Here it is important to remember that it is never healthy to cut our complete food groups. You will only have long term success with eating well balanced meals that supply all your nutritional needs.

Most of these plans are actually high fat diets. To be honest, even if you can manage to find a low fat protein diet, it is still not a good idea because of the lack of healthy nutrition.
