I remember the day I found out I was going to have to look for natural ways to lower cholesterol. I will never forget the look on my doctors' face when she looked at my blood test results.
She told me that my cholesterol was now higher than ever. I had been battling it for years, it was up and down like a yo-yo.
And then came the next bit of bad news, that this time around, because of elevated liver enzymes, she could not prescribe the usual cholesterol lowering medications.
She told me I was going to have to use natural ways to lower cholesterol to achieve results but warned me that I needed to give it my full attention as I was in the high risk category for heart attack, stroke or if it continued to rise, possible death.
Well in hindsight, I think this was the best thing that ever happened to me. People look at me like I am deranged when I say that!
But I was like the millions of other people around the world who had never really treated high cholesterol with the respect and attention it deserves and always knew I had prescribed medication to fall back on.
But now I had very high elevated liver enzymes which were also being investigated and I could no longer take any prescribed medication, let alone, any of the usual ones to lower my cholesterol.
It was a big wake up call but a long overdue one. Ok, where was I going to start.
Well first I needed to understand what cholesterol really was, what triggers the bad cholesterol to increase and what could be done naturally to lower the levels.
So I embarked on my health care and well being journey and started researching, reading, analysing, and questioning all about good and bad cholesterol.
I interviewed people who were willing to share their stories about their natural ways to lower cholesterol. Some of them were extremely forthcoming on sharing all of their experiences, including the bad parts and for this I was glad.
I knew that foods consumed played a major role in increasing or decreasing cholesterol levels. Fish is especially good for lowering cholesterol but the problem I had was that I do not like fish.
If this was going to be a lifestyle change, which it needed to be, I needed to be able to finely balance eating the foods I liked with lowering my cholesterol.
This is where people generally come unstuck. If you alter your diet to include foods you really do not like, then you will fail to sustain that diet long term.
So I wanted to be able to eat the foods I loved in moderation and still lower my cholesterol and more importantly maintain my lower cholesterol levels ongoing.
So I started looking at supplements to compliment my modified diet which would increase my chances of effectively lowering cholesterol.
Again, I spoke to a lot of people about supplements they were using and claiming how effective they were.
All too often you will get people making recommendations but withholding vital components regarding side effects, adverse reactions, negative results etc.
So while I was happy that people were willing to share their experiences, I did not take everything they said at face value.
I documented their recommendations and then set about researching all I could about the products. Now I went even further than that, I researched the ingredients of all the products recommended and it was enlightening.
The majority of products I could not use, as, even if they lowered my cholesterol level, they would most certainly raise my liver enzymes to even higher levels.
My search for natural ways to lower cholesterol continued.
And I eventually found a supplement that met all of my criteria. Combined with my daily diet, it would effectively help lower my cholesterol without impacting on my liver or any other major organ in my body. I was so happy.
When I revisited my doctor some months later, she had to check my results twice!
My cholesterol level had gone from the high risk category for heart disease to a very low ideal reading. I did not want to just throw away all the research I had done and keep all the information to myself.
I had lost family members and friends to heart disease and I will never know if the information I discovered would or could have saved their lives.
I decided to share the information with family, friends and neighbours that I knew were in the same boat I had been in.
And now I want to go one step further and share the natural ways to lower cholesterol with anyone else that needs help with lowering cholesterol and keeping it lowered.
