All About LDL Cholesterol

It may seem like the liver only manufactures and releases LDL cholesterol into the blood, but what you must know is that it also removes LDL cholesterol from the blood. The rapid removal from the blood and low blood l levels are all influenced by the high number of active LDL receptors on the liver surfaces. High LDL cholesterol blood levels are often associated with a deficiency of LDL receptors.

Total cholesterol levels, HDL and LDL cholesterol levels are all significantly influenced by a person's hereditary diseases and diet. A common inherited disorder whose victims have shown a smaller or even worse - no LDL receptors on the surface of liver cells is familial hypercholesterolemia (FH). Also, during early adulthood, people who suffer from this disorder tend to develop heart attacks and atherosclerosis.

Diets that are high in cholesterol and saturated fats also raise the levels of LDL in the blood. Fats are generally classified according to their chemical structure in two classes: saturated and unsaturated. Saturated fats have their origin basically in animal products and dairy products and these are those that raise blood cholesterol levels. Also, high in saturated fats are some vegetable oils made from cocoa, palm and coconut.

Lowering LDL cholesterol

The primary focus in preventing atherosclerosis and heart attack is lowering LDL cholesterol. Most treatments and diets today in order to lower LDL cholesterol include the following:

Stopping or reducing the formation of new cholesterol plaques on the artery walls.

Widening those narrowed arteries

Reducing the size of the existing plaques found on the artery walls.

Preventing the rupture of cholesterol plaques. It has been known that when a cholesterol plaque.

ruptures it initiates a blood clot.

Decrease the risk of heart attacks.

Decreasing the risk of strokes. The same measures that retard atherosclerosis in coronary arteries.

Also benefits the carotid and cerebral arteries (arteries that deliver blood to the brain).
