Do Low Carb Diets Work?

As the problem on obesity continues to become a global pandemic, different dietary approaches have been introduced by thousands of renowned experts worldwide. Each approach has its own claim to fame, but generally all are aimed at offering effective measures to lose weight.

One of the most controversial kinds of diet plans is the Low Carb Diet that advocates reduction in the consumption of carbohydrates.

The rationale behind Low Carb Diets is based on the idea that at states where the levels of carbohydrates in the body is too low than required to produce the needed amount of energy, the body resorts to the utilization of stored fats and water as an alternative sources of energy.

The famous Dr. Atkins low carbohydrate diet is considered a fad diet plan but had been recognized by many people including celebrities as an effective approach for permanent weight loss.

Many people who have tried this dietary practice have confirmed that it is really a great way to lose pounds at a quicker pace.

Although the advantages and disadvantages of this approach still remain to be controversial up to the present, several proven benefits derived from it are worthy to be given proper credit.

Low carbohydrate diet does not only work as a weight loss wonder. Recent studies have shown that this approach have an added advantage of decreasing triglycerides level. It was also found to be effective in increasing the levels of HDL (good cholesterol) in the body.

It is then a highly recommended diet for people with hypertension and increased risk for heart disease.

Despite its good results there is plenty that contradicts this and there are some obvious side effects to such diets.

Personally one that hit me was that off terrible smelling breath. I noticed this on a friend who was using a zero carb diet. I think the amount of meat he was eating was leaving an excessive amount of bacteria in his mouth. Chewing gum didn't seem to help either.

Another common problem is that of constipation. Again this is due to the amount of protein but also the lack of fibre or 'ruffage' as it is often called. So digestion is a little hampered to say the least.

Losing weight doesn't have to be as extreme as some of the low carb diets you may see. Yes they work, although health issues are still being tested, but other more healthy and tasty diets achieve excellent results too.
