Foods to Include in Your Diet to Assist in Weight Loss

Many people who try to lose weight simply go about it the wrong way by eating the wrong foods. Diets do not have to be a period of starvation but lots of healthy and low calorie foods to keep you healthy as well as losing the weight. Following are a few great foods to keep in mind.

Carbohydrates are not a sin

Many people shy away from carbs as they have heard that they are fattening. Certainly if you eat too much you will put on weight however, carbohydrate, weight for weight, contains less energy than fat and around the same as protein. With the science out of the way, carbs are simply a great packing food to keep you full up and prevent snacking. Foods such as pasta, healthy granary breads and baked potatoes are all great foundations for meals with some low fat veg and tasty tomato based sauces or other sauces which are not cream based.

Fruit and Vegetables

OK, this is a bit obvious but many people forget or are unaware of the amazing possibilities for great accompaniments to meals or snacks that fruit and veg bring. It's not all cabbage and sprouts, there are so many tasty veggies out there such as butternut squash, red, yellow and orange peppers and sweet potato. They are almost a meal by themselves with a bit of garnish. Try going for colorful veggies to cheer up your meal and bulk out the dish. Fruits such as mango, pineapple, cherries and other berries are all low fat, low calorie foods and you can eat them as snacks or for desert with a little yoghurt.

Healthy oils

Not all oils are bad for you, in fact fat is a necessary macro nutrient in the diet, so it just boils down to eating the right type of fats. This will usually include vegetable oils such as olive oils and sunflower. Try to stay away from animal fats, lard and cream during your diet and throughout your life as much as possible. If you are looking to reduce your cholesterol, try eating spreads which include plant sterols in the ingredients, as they have cholesterol reducing properties.

Losing weight without a doubt requires some knowledge on healthy foods and what to avoid. Reducing your calorie intake and bulking out meals with fruit, veg and healthy carb dishes should see you on your way to safe weight loss.
