Low Fat Diets - Are They Really That Good For Weight Loss?

Devised on the premise that all fats are bad, this idea was popular several decades ago, but has since been modified. Weight loss results from avoiding foods that are high in saturated fat, especially those that combine this type of animal-derived fat with sugar. This is why foods like crisps, pastries and biscuits cause weight gain.

However, avoiding all fats starves the body of beneficial fats from fish and plant sources. This can affect hormone balance and the body's ability to regulate fats and cholesterol, both of which can lead to weight gain. Also, many low-fat products replace fats and oils with sugar and additives that can raise blood sugar levels - the main culprit for weight gain.

There are many slimming clubs that provide a specific points score for foods based on calorie, fat and fibre content. A daily limit of points is set and it is up to you which foods you choose. The support group aspect of these clubs works well to motivate people, and sensible, gradual weight loss is encouraged. However, no foods are banned, so some people may use their points up on unhealthy foods, with weight loss occurring simply on account of a lower calorie intake.

These people's metabolisms may slow down to conserve energy and they are likely to gain weight after stopping the system. Certain healthy foods may also be avoided because they have high point scores, such as nuts, seeds and avocados. These foods contain beneficial fats, which is why they have the high scores, but they are vital to a healthy diet.
