The Importance of Understanding Your Cholesterol Level

There are many reasons that it is extremely important to understand your cholesterol level. The first and foremost reason is that having a high cholesterol can make you prone to heart disease and/or stroke. A majority of the time, high cholesterol comes from poor dietary habits, and therefore can be managed by eating a healthy balanced diet and regular exercise.

There are two types of cholesterol, one being good and one being bad. The good cholesterol is HDL and the bad is LDL. The good cholesterol helps build cell membrane as well as certain hormones; the bad cholesterol in high levels will clog the arteries and cause a heart attack in due time.

A diet rich in vegetables, fruits, whole grains, high-fiber foods, lean meats and poultry, fish at least twice a week and fat-free or 1 percent dairy products and low in saturated and trans fats and cholesterol is a delicious way to help your cholesterol levels. A minimum of thirty minutes of physical activity four to five days a week is also recommended to keep healthy cholesterol levels. Avoid tobacco smoke at all costs when considering your cholesterol and health as well. These are a few natural ways to maintain healthy cholesterol levels and a great way to lessen your risk of heart disease.

All though it isn't extremely difficult to maintain the healthy lifestyle to manage your cholesterol, as you can see it is very important to be conscious of your cholesterol level at all times. Remember, regular maintenance is always the best prevention of any disease. Once you have to treat a problem, it's usually too late.
