Ways to Lower Your Cholesterol

Made by the liver and naturally occurring in the body, cholesterol is an essential element to maintaining health. There are two types of cholesterol, however, and understanding the difference can help you to make healthy decisions and live a healthier, longer life.

Before continuing let us differentiate between "good" cholesterol and "bad" cholesterol. Good cholesterol or HDL is made by liver and can also be found in foods such as shellfish and eggs. HDL or high-density lipoprotein is essential to maintain heart health by carrying out the process of eliminating excess plaque and cholesterol in the blood by taking it to the liver where it is further processed and eliminated from the body. LDL, or low-density lipoprotein is also know as "bad" cholesterol and is the main cause of plaque build up in the arteries which can lead to heart attack and stroke.

While cholesterol is needed in moderation, too much can lead to the life-threatening problems that were earlier mentioned. To maintain healthy levels of cholesterol, the following should be followed: a heart-healthy diet, cessation of tobacco use, and diet and exercise. Eating a heart healthy diet rich in whole grains, fruit, and vegetable and proteins, is the best way to lose weight as well as lower cholesterol. As seen on television and in print, studies show that a diet that is high is whole grains, such as oatmeal or Cheerios, may help to lower cholesterol. Next quitting the nicotine addiction will lower the levels of triglycerides, or fats in the blood, and help achieve healthy levels of cholesterol. Those who are nervous about gaining weight when kicking the habit can avoid gaining weight by following these weight loss tips. Eat healthy, exercise, and avoid replacing the nicotine habit with and equally devastating one, such as eating junk food. Finally participating in a diet and exercise routine is the best way to lower cholesterol and lose weight. Sticking to heart healthy foods as well as keeping active will ensure overall health.
