10 Habits That Mess Up Your Diet

A simple easy diet and workout plan should solve your problems, right? Maybe. But, the old "mind over matter" part of the equation cannot be left out. Every challenge requires mental agility.

How many articles have you read, websites have you visited, or products have you tried? No matter what, there is no "magic bullet" on earth that will solve your problem if you don't engage your own MIND and WILL in the process.

If it is true that it takes 21 days to create a habit, then let's make sure we consciously work to break the old ones, or replace them with good ones. If you are tired of the self-sabotage, then review this list and see if any of these might be the enemy in your lifestyle.

1. SNACKS Lining your cupboards with the wrong snacks. You choose what to buy at the market. don't you? Skip the cookies, chips, soda and other high calorie, zero nutritional snacks. This is by far the number one diet tip around. Instead, buy nuts, yes, almonds, pecans and walnuts are best. Loaded with fiber, lots of minerals, and good fats. A handful can carry you far. Granola bars without frosting, trail mix, and lite popcorn satisfy, as do whole grain pretzels. Learn to reach for a fruit and drink plenty of water.

2. TV Too much time sitting in front of the "boob tube". You don't have to forfeit all your viewing time, but why not do a simple easy workout of squats or lunges while watching? Crunches, sit ups, and floor stretches while viewing keeps you from mindless snacking and does your body good! You'll never again have the excuse, "I don't have time to exercise."

3. INTERNET Almost as bad as too much TV is surfing the net endlessly, mindlessly, with the possibility of a snack or soda being unconsciously consumed to excess at the same time. Limit your time on the net, or focus it on educational, uplifting content. Opt out of snacks, and just drink your water. Add a splash of lemon juice, or drink sparkling water. Refreshing! (Ever tried placing your laptop on a book shelf or high enough to stand while surfing?)

4. EATING ON THE RUN Without a plan, and preparing healthy meals and snacks ahead of time, our busy lives will most certainly conquer our best intentions. It is not uncommon to skip a meal because of work, kids or other obligations. The result is usually fatigue, headache, starvation and a quick stop at a fast food establishment for relief! IF you must, then make the conscious choice to eat a kitchensinkworkout.blinkweb.com/recipes-nutrition.html healthy salad, baked potato or fruit salad. Of course, it is always easy to carry an apple and a cereal bar along with your water for days like these.

5. THREE BIG MEALS PER DAY In our culture, we have been conditioned to eat that way. However, grazing, which typically means 6 smaller meals per day, may be a better way for you to go. It makes digestion easier, and since you eat a small amount of food every 2 to 3 hours, hunger doesn't have a chance to set in.

6. LOW FAT DIET Unfortunately, the whole world jumped on the bandwagon with these kinds of diet approaches. The concept that low fat will cause you to drop fat has resulted in unhealthy people. We need fats, but good fats, such as from raw almonds, walnuts and pecans, and fish like salmon, tuna and herring rich in Omega-3, and olive oil and avocados. All these lower cholesterol, and the risk of heart attack and stroke, and even help regulate blood sugar, which is important to diabetics, and to everyone to avoid the energy slump in the afternoon.

7. LOW CARB DIET In the same vein as the low fat diet craze, carbohydrates have been given a bum rap. Even diabetics have been advised that certain foods which are rich in fiber and complex carbohydrates will digest more slowly and protect against sudden blood sugar imbalances. These include vegetables such as spinach, artichokes, summer squash and eggplant, grains such as barley and oats, legumes like lentils, black beans, fruits like berries, peaches and grapefruits, and tofu. Sprinkling 2 tablespoons of wheat germ on yogurt or cereal or salads can add dietary fiber to your diet. Whole grain breads and cereals, not refined flours digest in a healthier way.

8. BEEF Protein is a must, but what kind? When it comes to beef, grass fed, free-range has more omega-3 levels than grain fed animals, and less saturated fat. Anti-inflammatory foods are essential to control weight and diabetes. So, along with salmon, fruits, nuts and veggies, lean, grass-fed beef is a good choice.

9. COOKING OIL The best all around oils are cold-pressed and extra-virgin olive oil. It is rich in oleic acid, another anti-inflammatory. Use it for all your cooking needs and salad dressings. Those Italians sure live a long, long life.

10. SELF TALK Whose voice are you listening to? What is it saying? You are either your own worst enemy, or you very best friend. Speak to yourself with encouragement, and applaud your healthy choices. Remind yourself daily that you are walking a path of transformation, each day becoming the very best you can be mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually.

Surround yourself with encouraging friends and accountability partners. Cheer each other on. Plan rewards for your diligence and persistence, perhaps a spa treatment, or a special outing. Be good to yourself, and never give up. Remember, both beauty and health begin on the inside.
