Low Carb Diet - Pros and Cons

Low carb diet is one of the most popular weight loss diets today. The idea behind this diet is simple, it is meant to limit the intake of carbohydrates which are found in rice, grains, bread and some types of vegetables and food. Probably the most famous low carb diet is Atkins diet. The end result for this diet is weight loss.

If you are wondering how limiting vegetables and fruits can help you lose weight while some strictly go for fruit and vegetable diets, here is a short explanation:

- Carbs are the main source of energy, they are converted into sugar during the digestion and as the sugar levels rise in our body so does the insulin. The theory goes that high levels of insulin use sugar as the main energy source and prevent fat to be used as the energy source. In other words, if you limit the carb intake you will force your body to use fat as the source of energy and burn it.

This is just a theory behind the low carb diet; it hasn't been proven that this actually works in the way described above. So let's take a look at the pros and cons of the low carb diet.

Pros:

- Easy to control the calorie intake

- The fullness effects lasts much longer with this diet

- It may lower the levels of cholesterol

- Easy long term diet

Cons:

- It can increase your cholesterol levels if not monitored

- If stopped suddenly your weight may return in no time

- It may seem like you are loosing weight while you are losing water weight and not fat

- You may not be getting enough fiber without fruits and vegetables

As you can see it has more cons than pros, after all, every healthy weight loss diet is focused on fruits and vegetables along with proper eating habits and exercises. There are no good and bad foods to choose from, just the way you eat.
